INDIANAPOLIS - Linebacker DQwell Jackson wont watch the film of the Colts regular-season meeting with the Bengals.Defensive lineman Cory Redding isnt focused on it either.Watching the game wont do them any good while preparing for Sundays wild-card matchup with Cincinnati.Whatever happened in that game, you have to completely wipe it out, Jackson said Thursday. Theyre a completely different ballclub now.For Redding, that game is history.Thats how many weeks ago? I dont pay attention or look at that stuff, Redding said. What we did in the past is in the past. When Indianapolis and Cincinnati met on Oct. 19, it was a 27-0 demolition by the Colts. Since then, things have changed. The Colts could see receiver A.J. Green for the first time if he is cleared from concussion protocol. Green was sidelined with a turf toe injury in the first meeting between the teams.Linebackers Emmanuel Lamur and Rey Maualuga missed that game with injuries, too. Now quarterback Andrew Luck has more to pick through in Sundays rematch. They do a great job of just making plays, Luck said. It seems like they have a great mix of good veterans, young guys that can play. We know every yard is tough against them.Indys offensive line has been decimated by injuries. Meanwhile, the Bengals have gotten a stronger ground game out of Jeremy Hill. The rookie running back wasnt on the Colts radar in Week 7. He totalled just 155 yards rushing over the first five games of the year, and ran for 15 yards against the Colts. Now, he leads all NFL rookies with 1,124 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on the ground, a threat the Colts (11-5) are preparing for.Our one biggest thing on our game plan is you must stop Hill, defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois said. We must stop that run game and make them beat us throwing.Hill became the third rookie with four games totalling 140 or more yards rushing — all after the Colts-Bengals game. With Hill, the Bengals (10-5-1) have become so much more effective running the ball.I expect them to come in and that will be their main focus, Jackson said. Thats what we have to do defensively is force them to get into the third-and-longs, and thats by winning first and second down.Indianapolis running game, on the other hand, hasnt been so consistent, even after the Colts rushed for 171 yards against the Bengals — their second-highest total of the season.Additionally, Indy has been searching for continuity on the offensive line. The Colts have battled injuries for much of the season, including starting right guard Hugh Thornton (shoulder) and A.Q Shipley (ankle), who started four games at centre and a game at left guard.Backup offensive lineman Joe Reitz returned this week after missing the previous three weeks with an ankle injury. On Wednesday, the Colts placed Gosder Cherilus on injured reserve. The right tackle, who has a groin injury, started 13 games.Thats just part of Indys worries. The Colts feel like they have a whole new Bengals team to prepare for. They give you a lot of problems as far as diagnosing, getting lined up, and playing assignment football, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. Theyre playing fast, theyre playing physical. Of course, with Hill running the way hes running and the offensive line doing extremely well, its going to be a huge challenge for us.NOTES: Shipley (ankle) and Thornton (shoulder) didnt practice Thursday. . Receiver Reggie Wayne (groin) and linebackers Bjoern Werner (shoulder) and Erik Walden (knee) were upgraded to full practice. . Colts offensive co-ordinator Pep Hamilton avoided questions about the Raiders interest in him as a potential head coach. When asked if he was given permission to speak with Oakland, Hamilton said, My total focus is just to prepare for Sundays game against the Bengals and thats what were doing.___Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Custom Philadelphia Phillies Nike Jerseys . Derek Anderson filled in for Newton and threw for 277 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-17 on Sunday. Newton suffered two transverse process fractures in his lower back in a two- car accident Tuesday afternoon near the teams stadium. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday morning and will be re-evaluated next week. Anderson, who also started for Newton in the Panthers Week 1 win at Tampa Bay, completed 25-of-40 passes. Greg Olsen caught 10 balls for 110 yards and Kelvin Benjamin added 104 yards on eight receptions for Carolina (5-8-1), which is percentage points ahead of the New Orleans Saints (5-8) for first place in the division. The Saints visit the Chicago Bears on Monday night. The Atlanta Falcons came into Sunday tied with the Saints for first place, but they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-20. Josh McCowns 16-yard touchdown scramble on a 3rd-and-11 clawed the Bucs within 19-17 with 3:11 left, but the Panthers picked up a pair of first downs and took the next 2:48 off the clock. Tampa Bay regained possession with 23 seconds remaining, but Luke Kuechlys interception on second down sealed the outcome. McCown completed 13-of-28 passes for 154 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Buccaneers (2-12), who have dropped four straight games. Doug Martin carried the ball 14 times for 96 yards and Vincent Jackson hauled in six passes for 70 yards in defeat. Carolina outgained Tampa Bay 249-156 and held the ball for 21:04 in the first half, but trailed 10-9 at the break. The Panthers drove into the Tampa Bay 40 on each of their four first-half possessions, but settled for a trio of Graham Gano field goals. The Panthers turned to their defense to finally gain the upper hand in the third, getting a turnover on Tampa Bays first possession and forcing a trio of three-and-outs on its next three drives before getting another takeaway. Tampa Bay was faced with a 3rd-and-15 on its initial possession of the third..dddddddddddd A backpedaling McCown was attempting to set up a screen, but Charles Johnson strip-sacked him from behind and Kawann Short made the recovery at the Bucs 5-yard line. Carolina quickly took advantage of the miscue when Anderson flipped a 2-yard TD pass to Jerricho Cotchery in the back of the end zone on a play-action seam pattern two plays later, staking the Panthers to a 16-10 lead. Carolina moved the ball deep into Tampa Bay territory on its next drive, but Stewart fumbled inside the 10. Alterraun Verner stripped the ball away from Stewart, while was fighting for extra yardage, and Akeem Spence pounced on the ball at the 8-yard line. The Bucs offense finally gained some traction late in the third. An 18-yard Charles Sims run off left tackle and a 16-yard Jackson reception helped them move the ball into Carolina territory. But Roman Harper stripped McCown from behind and Bene Benwikere recovered the downfield fumble at the 27. Gano split the uprights from 45 yards out on the Panthers next drive to put them up by two scores, 19-10, midway through the fourth. Earlier, Gano connected on a 29-yard field goal, capping Carolinas opening 13-play, 73-yard possession. The Bucs responded on their first touch. Martin broke off a 63-yard run up the middle and McCown flipped an 8-yard TD pass to Mike Evans three plays later to give Tampa Bay a 7-3 advantage. Gano hit from 49 yards out on Carolinas ensuing touch late in the first quarter, but missed wide left from 50 yards out on its next drive. He nailed a 38-yard field goal on the Panthers final sequence of the half, giving them a 9-7 edge with 1:10 to go. Tampa Bay, though, gained 19 yards on a 3rd-and-10 via a McCown screen pass to Sims, which set up a Patrick Murray 48-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the half. Game Notes Newton was dealing with a rib injury in Week 1 and Anderson went 24-of-34 passing for 230 yards with two touchdowns in the 20-14 victory over the Bucs ... WASHINGTON -- Ian Desmond keyed a 15-hit attack with a three-run homer, Stephen Strasburg pitched six solid innings and the Washington Nationals defeated the Texas Rangers 9-2 on Friday night. Jayson Werth and Denard Span had three hits each for Washington, which had lost 6 of 7. Previously slumping, Washingtons offence has 14 runs and 30 hits in its last two games. Strasburg (4-4) allowed two unearned runs, though his error led to them, and six hits. He struck out nine and walked one. It was the eighth straight start in which Strasburg has pitched at least six innings and allowed three runs or less. He improved his ERA to a season-low 3.15. Adrian Beltre had three hits for Texas, which fell to 6-3 on its 11-game road trip. Rangers starter Colby Lewis (4-4) allowed six runs, five earned, and nine hits in taking his first road loss. Strasburg had thrown 88 pitches when manager Matt Williams lifted him in the sixth for a pinch-hitter with two outs and two on. The moved paid off when Tyler Moores double to left scored both runners, increasing Washingtons lead to 6-2. The Nationals added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Washington trailed 2-0 in the fourth when Werth and Adam LaRoche singled with one out. Lewis struck out Wilson Ramos, but Desmond sent a 1-0 fastball into the seats in centre field for his 10th home run. Span used his speed to make it 4-2 after he singled in the fifth. Running on the pitch, he kept going around second on Anthony Rendons grounder to third. First baseman Mitch Morelands throw back to the third was wild and Span scored on the error. Texas took the lead during a bizarre second inning. Beltre doubled leading off, but Strasburg stuck out the next two hitters and should have been out of the inning when Leonys Martin hit a slow bouncer to the mound. The ball bounced off Strasburgs glove, then his head, and fell to the ground. He still had a chance to get Martin but missed a stab at the ball. Martin was safe on the error with Beltre moving to third. Strasburg then surrendered RBI singles to the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters, Rougned Odor and Lewis. Lewis hit snapped an 0-for-23 stretch by Rangers pitchers going back to June 20, 2012. Cook chalked up the 30th Test hundred of his career on the fifth and final day of the drawn first Test against India to move past Sir Donald Bradman in the all-time list, finishing on 130 off 243 balls. In so doing, he registered his fifth century in India - a record as he eclipsed the four apiece scored by South Africas Hashim Amla and West Indian duo Clive Lloyd and Everton Weekes. Cook and Virat Kohli reflect on the drawn first Test The 31-year-old still has quite some distance to go, though, to match the achievements of Tendulkar who rattled up 51 Test centuries over a 200-Test career.Nevertheless, Botham says Cook - Englands most-capped Test captain and leading Test run-scorer of all time with 10,839 in 136 Tests - is not out of the running. He just breaks records, said Botham, speaking to Sky Sports in Rajkot.I was here in India when he flew halfway around the world to play in Mohali and got a hundred after 30-odd hours travelling, having arrived the night before.Hes now got 30 hundreds and is the one player currently playing in world cricket who I believe could get close to Sachin Tendulkar.Hes not yet 32 and batsmen can go on for a bit longer than the hard-working bowlers and all-rounders. ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- Michael Hutchinson felt he played below his personal standards in Saturdays Game 1 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In Game 2 Sunday, he redeemed himself. The IceCaps goalie stopped 34 shots as St. Johns evened its American Hockey League Eastern Conference final at a game apiece with a 2-1 victory over the Penguins. "I felt pretty good about my game tonight," Hutchinson said. "Last night I wasnt overly thrilled with my performance and I knew I wanted to come out and play better for the guys in the room tonight. I tried to come in and make the saves to hold the team in as much as I could and then we got the lead." The IceCaps started the game according to plan Sunday, carrying a lead into the first intermission. "Our focus was on getting the first goal in the first period and getting a little momentum on our side to get the crowd behind us," said Kyle MacKinnon, who scored the first goal of the game. Carl Klingberg also scored for the IceCaps, while Anton Zlobin replied for the Penguins. St. Johns held Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scoreless in six power-play chances to help the team hold onto the lead. "It was unbelievable," Hutchinson said. "All the players block shots and clear the puck to make my job a lot easier. When I have to make a save, it has to get through a lot of bodies before it makes it to me." "You never want to go down two games in a series, especially on home ice," Hutchinson added. "(Winning tonight) feels good and it is a confidence boost for us. I thought we played a lot better tonight than we did last night." MacKinnon opened the scoring for the IceCaps when he finished off a breakaway with a quick, high wrist shot after catching a Blair Riley stretch pass entering the blue-line 13:54 into the game. The IceCaps extended their lead when Klingberg got a stick on a Will ONeill slap shot from the point through traffic, finding the high right corner of the net at the 6:24 mark of the second period. Hutchinson kept the Penguins scoreless with a sprawling pad save to stone Harry Zolnierczyk on a breakaway with roughly six minutes left to play in the second period. With 1:04 left in the game, a cross-ice pass found Zlobin wide open in the left face-off dot, and he buried the puck top shelf over a sprawling Hutchinson to get the Penguins on the board. Nike Air Max 95 Canada . -- The Orlando Magic finally are showing the patience in critical moments that coach Jacque Vaughn has been waiting for all season. Nike Air Max 93 Canada .com) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quickly found themselves a new offensive coordinator, and one thats quite familiar with the NFC South.CHARLOTTE, N.C. - While much of the talk was about whether New Orleans could win a big game — or any game, for that matter — on the road, the conversation in the Saints locker room was about something completely different.Revenge.The Saints werent focused on breaking a seven-game road losing streak dating to last season. They were stinging from their four-point loss at Carolina last December that allowed the Panthers to take control of the NFC South lead and eventually win the division title. So New Orleans 28-10 victory Thursday night left the Saints (4-4) feeling pretty good.We knew we had a chance to take control of the division, said Mark Ingram, who ran for 100 yards on 30 carries. We lost to them here at the end of last year so we felt like we left something here. We had to come back and take care of business.Said Saints coach Sean Payton: We had a hard loss here last year, a tough loss. At halftime, we talked about that finish. The Saints are .500 for the first time this season and right that is good enough to lead the NFC South. And they are clearly playing better than any of their division rivals. Here are some things we learned from the Saints victory over the Panthers (3-5-1):SAINTS COME RUNNING IN: The Saints are dangerous enough with Drew Brees, but the idea of the New Orleans having a running game is downright scary. Ingram has rushed for 272 yards and three touchdowns in back-to-back wins. It wasnt always pretty, and yet, we were able to control the game a little bit, Payton said. That was a big plus. The Saints are putting up big numbers with Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson still out with injuries.HARDY GONE FOR SEASON: The Panthers certainly need help on defence, but it isnt going to come in the form of Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy. A person familiar with the situation says Hardys domestic violence appeal trial set for Nov. 17 has been postponed until next year, meaning his season — and his career — with Carolina ccould be over.dddddddddddd The Panthers placed Hardy on the exempt-commissioners permission list Sept. 17. He isnt allowed to return until after his trial is resolved. He will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.WHERES THE OFFENSE: The Panthers have failed to break the 10-point plateau in each of the last two games. Cam Newton has not thrown a TD pass in either game, although rookie Kelvin Benjamin has dropped two passes in the end zone. Everybodys looking for a magic play, said Newton, who misfired on 18 of 28 passes and threw for 151 yards. Everybodys looking for somebody to say something, for somebody to do something and take responsibility for themselves. I know I am. I need to be better.BENJAMINS STRUGGLES: For the second straight week, Panthers rookie Benjamin dropped a potential TD pass in the end zone. Newton bailed him out by rushing for a touchdown a few plays later, but its becoming a problem for a team that is struggling to put points on the board. I thought the ball was delivered at a pretty good spot, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said of the drop. It was coming in hot and there was a defender on him but he has made those catches and as he grows and develops as a receiver hell know he has to make all those plays.PROTECTING CAM: Clearly Carolinas injuries on the offensive line have become an issue. The injury-plagued Panthers played without three starters on the offensive line, including left tackle Byron Bell. Both starting guards were also out. Against the Saints the Panthers started a pair of undrafted rookies in left tackle David Foucault and left guard Andrew Norwell. I thought our young guys fought and battled and tried to do the best they can, Rivera said. They came up against a veteran defence as well that did some things that were a little different. I thought our young guys tried to hang in there and do the best they could.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

Levante, which had lost five straight including a Copa del Rey game last weekend, fell behind at its Ciutat de Valencia stadium when Ionut Sapanura opened the scoring for Elche in the 26th minute.GLENDALE, Ariz. -- When Mike Ribeiro first arrived in Phoenix, he wasnt sure how he would fit in, on the ice and in the locker room. Having the added honus of being the scoring saviour on a team thats needed one for a decade didnt help much. Once Ribeiro found his comfort level with his new teammates and role on his new team, the points started flowing -- and havent stopped since. Ribeiro scored two goals for the second straight game and extended his points streak to seven games, lifting the Coyotes to a 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames Tuesday night. "It took a while for me to get comfortable with the guys and for them to know me and, I guess to like me," Ribeiro said. "So now that we did that, Im comfortable and its fun to come to work." Ribeiro had a quiet start in the desert after signing a four-year, $22 million contract, failing to register a point his first three games. Realizing he had been thinking too much instead of reacting, Ribeiro shifted his game into a new, freewheeling gear, starting with an assist in Phoenixs 3-0 win over Detroit on Oct. 10 that kick-started what had been an awful start to a five-game road trip. Ribeiro hasnt stopped scoring since, notching two goals against the Red Wings in Phoenixs comeback victory on Saturday and two more against Calgary, including the game-winner just a few minutes after the Flames tied it in the third period. Rob Klinkhammer added an empty-net goal for Phoenix, which has earned 12 of a possible 14 points in its past seven games. The Coyotes, with 14 points (6-2-2), are off to their best start since opening the 2000-01 season 7-1-2. "He likes to make a difference in games and hes doing that for us right now," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. The Coyotes needed Ribeiros big night after a couple of defensive miscues allowed the Flames back into a game they had been dominated in for most of the first two periods. Sluggish after facing Los Angeles the night before, Calgary fell behind 2-0 in the second period after Radim Vrbatas 200th career goal and Ribeiros first of the night. The Flames finally found some life late in the second, using a turnover to set up Lee Stempniaks goal in the second period and another that led to Joe Colbornes breakaway goal early in the third. Calgary couldnt sustain it, though, unable to get anythiing past Mike Smith the rest of the third period to lose for the third time during a five-game road trip that ends at Dallas on Thursday.dddddddddddd Jiri Hudler had an assist to extend his season-opening points streak to nine games for the Flames. "The first period, we didnt skate very well, I felt our energy level was not very good, we were not throwing enough pucks at the net," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "The second period, we got going. I really liked our last 40 minutes. We gave ourselves a chance to win the game." Phoenix wanted to jump on the Flames early after they played the night before and did just that, scoring on a power play when Vrbata gathered a pass from Keith Yandle and wristed it past Joey MacDonald from the right circle for his fifth goal of the season. Phoenix was at its defensive best early on as well, blocking shots and pushing the Flames toward the boards while holding them to three shots in the first period. Ribeiro made it 2-0 in the second period, raising his stick waist high to deflect a shot by Mikkel Boedker past MacDonald. "They took it to us in the first period," Stempniak said. "I didnt think we played very well, lost a lot of puck battles. Calgary finally showed some life late in the second period, with Stempniak scoring late on a rebound and Colborne tying it early in the third. Ribeiro came through again less than three minutes later. Set up to the right of MacDonald, he ripped a one-timer from a tough angle on another crossing pass from Yandle, putting the Coyotes up 3-2 with his fifth of the season. The Flames tried to generate a final push, but Smith made some big saves and Klinkhammer sealed Phoenixs victory with his fourth of the season. "It wasnt a masterpiece, lets put it that way," Tippett said. "It was a quirky game that could have gone a lot of different ways." It ended up in Phoenixs favour, thanks to Ribeiro. NOTES: Both teams played without their captains. Phoenixs Shane Doan was out with a lower-body injury and Calgarys Mark Giordano was scratched after leaving during pregame warm-ups. ... The Coyotes recalled F Brandon Yip before the game and sent F Tim Kennedy to Portland of the AHL before the game. Yip started in place of Doan. ... Hudler has 12 points in nine games this season. Hajrullahu knocked through another field goal early in the second quarter (29 yards). The rest of the half was quiet, with the only other score coming on a single from Calgary, as the visitors carried a 16-6 lead into the halftime locker room. SAN ANTONIO -- Tiago Splitter and the Spurs got out to a fast start, then hung on for a bumpier second half against the disorganized Los Angeles Clippers. Splitter had a season-high 22 points before he was hurt, Tim Duncan added 19 points and 11 rebounds, and San Antonio beat Los Angeles 116-92 Saturday night in their first game without injured All-Star Chris Paul. Tony Parker had 17 points, Manu Ginobili added 15 points and Kawhi Leonard had 10 points for San Antonio (26-8). Splitter left with 9:37 remaining, injuring his right shoulder after charging into Ryan Hollins chest. Jamal Crawford scored 24 points, Blake Griffin had 19 points and Darren Collison added 14 points and six assists starting in place of Paul, who separated his right shoulder Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks. Los Angeles gave up 70 points in the first half for the second consecutive night, but rallying proved tougher to do against a 35-point lead than the three-point deficit they faced against Dallas. "Its easier to do it once you play so bad the game before because you know the mistakes you made," Ginobili said. "We were really sharp from the beginning; our first half was great. Then we kind of stopped a little bit, but the first half was fun to watch. Everybody sharing the ball, attacking, being quick, rotations real sharp, really good first half." While the Clippers understandably stalled without their leader, who is expected to be out three to five weeks, the rest of their game disappeared, too. "No one has to replace Chris anything," Griffin said. "Not his voice, not his game, nothing. Everybody does things differently. We dont have any other guys that talk like Chris. Itll work just fine. In the second half we were communicating with each other. Thats all we needed. We didnt need anyone to talk like Chris. That would be our biggest mistake, is to try to replace him with someone or something." Los Angeles had just one rebound in the first quarter while allowing San Antonio to score a season-high 37 points. "In the first half we looked more AAU," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "The ball stuck. I bet half the time it was one pass, shot; one pass, shot." After Collisons jumper with 2:20 left in the first, Los Angeles didnt score again until Matt Barnes layup with 9:40 left in the half. San Antonio extended its lead to 70-35 at the half, its season high for point in an opening half. NOTES: Spurs F Boris Diaw missed the game with an undisclosed illness. . The Clippers Stephen Jackson received a mixed reaction upon entering the game in the final 2 minutes. Jackson was waived late last season after reportedly butting heads with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. . The Spurs public address announcer mistakenly screamed "Manu Ginobili" in the opening minute of game, crediting him with an assist on Tiago Splitters basket even though the guard had yet to enter. The assist actually belonged to Marco Belinelli, Ginobilis friend and former Euroleague teammate. . Bostons bats exploded in Mondays opener, as David Ortiz belted a pair of two-run homers, Stephen Drew homered and drove in four runs and the Red Sox pummeled the Blue Jays, 14-1. The Blue Jays, fresh off a series win against the Texas Rangers, got a run via consecutive doubles from Erik Kratz and Juan Francisco in the third inning. Drew Hutchison (6-9) did not make it out of the top half of the third en route to his fifth loss in his last six starts. "It was a bad night," Hutchison said. "I didnt give us a chance to win." Hoping for similar support tonight the Red Sox will rely on righty Jake Peavy, whose only win this season came against the Jays. Hes dropped eight decisions since that win back on April 25 and is a miserable 1-8 on the year with a 4.59 ERA. "You kind of put that aside. Hes worked deep into games. Hes pitched low-run games. Toronto, meanwhile, will hand the ball to lefty J.A. Happ, who is 7-5 with a 4.91 ERA. Happ hasnt started since giving up five runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels back on July 7, but pitched in relief on July 12 against Tampa, surrendering two runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Happ is 2-2 in six games (5 starts) versus the Red Sox with a 5.33 ERA. Despite Mondays shellacking Toronto has won four of its seven meetings with the Red Sox this season. Mike Napoli went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs scored, while Jackie Bradley Jr. and Christian Vazquez each had two RBI for the surging Red Sox, winners in eight of their last nine. "We had a good offensive approach up and down the lineup," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "It was a well played game in all phases." Bostons season-high output overshadowed a terrific outing from John Lackey (11-6), who did his part with seven innings of one-run, two-hit ball. ' ' '

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson has been arrested again for drunken driving, putting his status with the team in question after a perilous one-car crash that heavily damaged the sports utility vehicle he was driving. Henderson was booked into jail Wednesday and released Thursday on $12,000 bail. He has a court appearance scheduled March 3 on these charges: second and third degree driving while intoxicated and test refusal; possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and violation of a limited driver license. Henderson was arrested in Chanhassen, a suburb near team headquarters in Eden Prairie. The Vikings issued a statement Thursday morning: "We are aware of the matter involving Erin Henderson. We are continuing to gather information and will have further comment at the appropriate time." According to the Carver County Sheriffs office, Henderson was travelling on a county road when he lost control of the car, skidded over the centerline and went through a grassy area and a park-and-ride lot before colliding with some trees. The 27-year-old Henderson, who finished second on the team in tackles this season, was not injured. Officers observed a strong odour of alcohol on Hendersons breath as well as bloodshot and glassy eyes. He was arrested after "performing poorly during standardized field sobriety testing," according to a news release from the sheriffs office. Henderson was moved to middle linebacker this year and the starter there until he was arrested Nov. 19 in Eden Prairie on suspicion of DWI and drug possession, one of three arrests involving Vikings players that month. Audie Cole took his spot, and Henderson returned to his previous position on the weak side. Henderson has one season left on his contract with a $1.95 million salary, but if the Vikings cut him before the new league year begins theyd only take a $250,000 hit against their salary cap for the remaining prorated portion of his signing bonus. Henderson spoke to reporters after the first arrest about "a wake-up call" that he said he thought would help him mature. Again this week as players cleaned out their cubicles following the end of the season, Henderson said he was in a better place. "I think I grew leaps and bounds as a player and as a person as well," he said Monday. MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina -- Italy reached the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup on Sunday when Fabio Fognini defeated Carlos Berlocq of Argentina to give Italy an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five series. Fognini defeated Berlocq 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 in 3 hours, 38 minutes. It was Italys first victory over Argentina in Davis Cup play, and the loss ended Argentinas 12-year streak of reaching the quarterfinals. "It was a perfect weekend," Fognini said. "We knew that Argentina was a tough team, but I was very focused mentally." Although the league wont hand out its individual awards until the summer, debates about who deserves the trophies begin shortly after the season begins. Sometimes guys run away with an award and distance themselves from the rest of the field, but the 2014-15 races appear to be extremely competitive at the moment. So, without further ado, lets take a look at whos on their way to winning some of the most coveted hardware this spring. HART TROPHY (MOST VALUABLE PLAYER) Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins The problem with the Hart Trophy race is some of the best individual efforts this season have come from players on teams that may not even make the playoffs. Philadelphias Jakub Voracek leads the league in scoring and his teammate Claude Giroux isnt far behind, but the Flyers are struggling as a whole and the clubs poor season will hinder both star players MVP quests. Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars finds himself in a similar situation. Malkin, meanwhile, is second only to Voracek in points and is leading a Pittsburgh team in the race for the Metropolitan Division title. The Russian star has 19 goals and 49 points in 42 games and could wind up winning his third Art Ross Trophy as the leagues leading scorer. Malkin also has a Hart Trophy to his credit, winning the MVP for the 2011-12 season. We also cant count out Malkins teammate Sidney Crosby, a two-time Hart Trophy recipient who has 47 points on 12 goals and 35 assists. Anaheim centerman Ryan Getzlaf and Chicago winger Patrik Kane also are in the Hart race, as is goaltender Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators. Of course, its extremely rare for a netminder to win the MVP. Jose Theodore was the last goalie to do it when he won the Hart with the Montreal Canadiens in 2001-02. Other finalists: Getzlaf (Anaheim), Rinne (Nashville) NORRIS TROPHY (BEST DEFENSEMAN) Mark Giordano, Calgary Flames The advanced statistics community has been talking up Giordanos Norris credentials for a few years now, but 2014-15 could be the season he actually wins the award for top defenseman. Giordano received one first-place vote for the Norris in 2013-14, but wound up finishing 10th in the overall voting as Chicagos Duncan Keith won it for the second time in his career. The difference in 2014-15 is Giordano has the offensive numbers to bolster his case. Last season he finished 12th in scoring among blueliners with 47 points. He is currently second with 10 goals and 26 assists in 43 games, and his 36 points are only one behind Kevin Shattenkirk of the St. Louis Blues. While this season has served as a coming-out party for Giordano, he hardly has the Norris race wrapped up. Keith is likely to be in the mix again, and Shattenkirk, Nashvilles Shea Weber, Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings are a few other names worthy of mention at the midway point. Other finalists: Weber (Nashville), Keith (Chicago) VEZINA TROPHY (BEST GOALTENDER) Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators Like Giordano for Norris, Rinne is leading the way in a stacked field for the Vezina. A trendy pick to win the Hart, the Finnish star has been hailed as one of the biggest reasons for Nashvilles resurgence this season. The club finished out of the playoffs in 2013-14 and the Predators struggles were due in large part to Rinne missing over four months due to a infection in his surgically repaired hip. A healthy Rinne has helped alter Nashvilles fortunes in 2014-15, with the team currently tied with Anaheim for the most points in the NHL. Rinne, a two- time Vezina finalist, has posted a 29-6-2 record in 37 games this season while sporting a 1.96 goals against average and .931 save percentage. However, an injury suffered on Tuesday night against Vancouver could wind up derailing Rinnes award-worthy season. The 32-year-old suffered a sprained knee in a collision with Canucks forward Chris Higgins and it will cause Rinne to be sidelined until after the All-Star break. Nashville fans are hoping the club is simply being careful with its franchise goaltender, but the injury does seem to open the door for another Vezina candidate to swipe the award. The rest of the field is packed with worthy goaltenders like Tampa Bays Ben Bishop, Montreals Carey Price, Pittsburghs Marc-Andre Fleury and Jaroslav Halak of the New York Islanders. Other finalists: Halak (NY Islanders), Price (Montreal) CCALDER MEMORIAL TROPHY (ROOKIE OF THE YEAR) Aaron Ekblad, Florida Panthers Its not rare to see one standout rookie run away with the Calder Memorial Trophy, but 2014-15 gives us no shortage of worthy first-year candidates.dddddddddddd Earlier this season, it did seem like Nashvilles Filip Forsberg would skate away with the Calder, but the gap has been closed considerably thanks to the emergence of guys like Aaron Ekblad, Johnny Gaudreau and Michael Hutchinson. Ekblad gets the nod for me because it is so rare to see an NHL defenseman thrive as a rookie, let alone an 18-year-old. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, has made a seamless transition from Canadian junior hockey to the NHL and given Florida a cornerstone defenseman to build around. The blueliner has helped Florida, a young team which was expected to be near the bottom of the NHL standings, stay in the race for a playoff spot this season. Ekblad is leading all rookie defensemen with 24 points on five goals and 19 assists and also is logging over 22 minutes of ice time per night. His point total trails only Forsberg and Gaudreau among all rookie skaters. But, if this is purely a scoring race, Forsberg is still the leading candidate for the Calder. The 20-year-old Swede leads all rookies with 39 points over 42 games for Nashville, but Calgarys Gaudreau, the former Boston College standout better known by his nickname Johnny Hockey, has been gaining ground on Forsberg. Gaudreau only managed a goal and two assists through his first nine games this season, but he currently has 32 points (13 goals, 19 assists) over 42 contests. Hutchinson, meanwhile, is making a Calder case from the Winnipeg crease. The Jets goaltender has formed an effective tandem with veteran Ondrej Pavelec and the 24-year-old is 12-4-2 with a 2.00 GAA and .931 save percentage in 19 games. There is plenty of time for any of these candidates to distinguish themselves from the pack, but Ekblad is my front-runner. Other finalists: Forsberg (Nashville), Gaudreau (Calgary) ADAMS TROPHY (COACH OF THE YEAR) Peter Laviolette, Nashville Predators Last season, Colorados Patrick Roy earned the coaching award in his first season behind an NHL bench. In 2014-15, a mainstay of the coaching scene is leading the Adams field. Peter Laviolette reached the top of the NHL mountain by leading Carolina to a Stanley Cup title in 2006, but the American has never won the Adams. However, Laviolette may get his hand on the trophy this season for his stellar work in his debut season with the Predators. Laviolette was fired by Philadelphia after just three games in 2013-14 and was out of coaching until Nashville came calling last spring. He had big shoes to fill, taking over for Barry Trotz, the only head coach the franchise knew until he was fired for missing the playoffs in two consecutive seasons. As mentioned above, a healthy Rinne has helped Nashville rebound in 2014-15, but Laviolettes impact cannot be forgotten, either. After all, we are in the middle of January and the Predators still have yet to lose consecutive games. That level of consistency is rare and has everything to do with a veteran coach like Laviolette knowing which buttons to push and when to push them. Laviolette was tasked with transitioning the Preds from Trotzs defense-first style to a more up-tempo strategy and to say it has been a success would be an enormous understatement. Nashville has gone from an average of 2.61 goals per game in 2013-14 to 3.00 goals per game this season, and it has done so while somehow improving on defense. The Preds were 23rd in the league in team defense (2.84 GPG) in Trotzs last season in Music City and are currently first with only 2.17 goals surrendered per contest. The drastic improvement in overall play has Nashville at the top of the league standings and well on its way to the best regular season in franchise history. Its worth mentioning that Trotz also could get Adams consideration for getting Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals to buy into his defensive system. Unlike Laviolettes Predators, who have been great from Day 1 of 2014-15, Trotzs changes needed time to take root, but the Caps are playing with great confidence at this point of the season. Laviolette is a clear front-runner for the Adams with his stiffest competition coming from New York Islanders bench boss Jack Capuano, who has the Isles neck-and-neck with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Metropolitan Division crown. Other finalists: Capuano (NY Islanders), Trotz (Washington) ' ' '

Winnipeg Jets 5 Colorado Avalanche 4 (OT) (Jets 32-30-9, Home 17-14-6) – The game was the final in the five-game season series between the two teams, with every game being decided by one goal, four of them needing extra time. The win moved the Jets to within four points of Phoenix (Coyotes home to Florida Thursday) and two points of ninth-place Dallas (Dallas in Philadelphia Thursday). Jets next play Saturday at home to Carolina (TSN 1290), before heading out of a five-game road trip that starts in Dallas Monday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). The Jets started the day with news that Dustin Byfuglien would miss the game with a lower-body injury, and in warm-up had Zach Bogosian go down with an upper-body injury, forcing Paul Postma who was to be a healthy scratch to scramble and get dressed in time for the opening period. Despite no warm up Postma recorded his first two points of the season. Eric Tangradi went on the Olli Jokinen-Blake Wheeler line in place of Byfuglien and scored his third of the year. The Avs scored the opening goal 20 seconds in, Ryan OReilly putting one in off the skate of Bryan Little. But 2:55 later that line got the goal back, Andrew Ladd with his 20th from Little and Jacob Trouba. Eric Tangradi put the Jets in front banging home a goal-mouth pass from Wheeler, with Jokinen also drawing an assist. But on a delayed penalty against the Jets, Gabe Landeskog beat Al Montoya off a rebound to send the teams to the dressing rooms tied 2-2. Shots were 12-8 Colorado. Evander Kane with his 16th put the Jets in front, scoring off a great redirect pass from Devin Setoguchi. Postma picked up his first point of the season on the goal. But the Avs again tied the game, with Nick Holden scoring with 31 seconds left in the period. Jets outshot the Avs 11-5 in the second but only managed one past Reto Berra, making his Avalanche debut, but it was the third time this season Berra has faced the Jets, the previous meetings coming when he was with the Calgary Flames. It was much the same in the third, with the Jets getting a power play goal from Ladd to again take the lead. Wheeler and Toby Enstrom drew assists. For Ladd it was his 21st of the season and franchise-leading 67th as a Jet. For Enstrom it was his 200th NHL assist. But yet again the Avs came back. Cody McLeod with his third of the year on a two-on-one break made it 4-4 and that is the way regulation ended. Shots in the third were 8-7 Avs. So with each team assured a point, it was off to overtime. For the Jets it was the sixth time in the last 12 games they have gone to extra time. Wheeler ended it with his 24th of the year, assists to Postma and Enstrom. Wheeler outwaited Berra and had room after Berra anticipated a pass and left the side of the net open. It was Wheelers second overtime winner this season, both against Colorado. In five games against the Avs Wheeler has gone 5-5-10. He also has a franchise-leading 164 points as a Jet, and is now 1-7-8 in the last four games, 2-13-15 in the last 15 games, 9-19-28 in the last 27 games. Enstrom is now 1-5-6 in his last four games. Final shots were 27 apiece. It was the Jets 39th one-goal game of the season. Jets are 4-4-4 in the last 12. Trouba for the 14th time this season led the Jets in ice time at 24:17, while for the second straight game Ladd led in shots on goal with six. Jokinen and Little each took 23 face-offs, Jokinen winning 12, Little 11. It was a season high in ice time for Tangradi at 17:07, and also for Eric ODell at 15:39. He has been over 15 minutes in each of his last three games. Jets are now 13-7-4 under Paul Maurice with 11 games remaining, four at home. Post-game Maurice talked about not being able to hold the lead. "It didnt feel like that over the course of the game, it wasnt a matter of getting the lead, sit back and let them come. Being able to control yourself mentally with the magnitude of the game, that when one goes in on you being able to bounce back. "You saw it in our captain, who gave up a goal on their first shift and thats their assignment," continued Maurice. "And then the next shift go out and come back and score. That leadership is important on the bench and that tone was set early." Maurice said he expects Bogosian in the lineup Saturday and there is also a chance Byfuglien, Jim Slater and Ondrej Pavelec may be ready for Saturday as well. Yet coming off consecutive series losses at St. Louis and Pittsburgh, Los Angeles needed some sort of spark as August approaches. The Dodgers found it in the ballpark of their biggest rival, and left the Bay Area in first place following an emphatic three-game swing.BALTIMORE – The Blue Jays have won 40 of their first 70 games thanks in no small part to the clubs better luck with the injury bug this season. The weekend at Oriole Park has been less kind, with three players suffering varying degrees of injury. The worst ailment of the three, at least optically, is the deep bone bruise suffered by Adam Lind when he fouled a pitch off the top of his right foot in the sixth inning of Saturdays game. An x-ray after the game showed a deep bone bruise but no fracture. That diagnosis was backed up by a CT scan taken on Sunday morning. Lind, however, was in a walking boot and on crutches when he arrived at the ballpark. He was seen requiring the help of a golf cart to get off the team bus. R.A. Dickey played catch before the game with bullpen catcher Alex Andreopoulos. He tweaked his right groin in the seventh inning of Saturdays loss and removed himself from the game. Dickey insisted afterward his exit was a precautionary measure and expected to make his next start, scheduled for Saturday in Cincinnati. Brett Cecil is dealing with a left groin injury, which he suffered in the eighth inning of Friday nights game. He played catch before Sundays game. "He said he feels okay; not great but okay," said pitching coach Pete Walker. "He feels a little improvement from (Saturday) so treat the heck out of it today, get back in there and treat it and hopefully hes available on Tuesday." The Blue Jays decided against making rash decisions on Lind and Cecil, preferring instead to get through the series with the Orioles and into Mondays off-day before opening a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. A decision will have to be made by Tuesday. Manager John Gibbons worked with a three-man bench (technically a two-man bench with Lind unavailable) and an eight-man bullpen (technically a seven-man bullpen with Cecil unavailable) on Sunday.dddddddddddd The club has an impending decision to make on the status of Colby Rasmus, who spent the weekend in Toledo while on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Rasmus was to be reevaluated on Sunday. Buffalo concludes its series with the Mudhens on Sunday evening. Two outfielders, Kevin Pillar and Darin Mastroianni, are inside their 10-day option windows after being recently sent back to Buffalo. Either could be recalled if they replace a player going on the disabled list. Gibbons, at the moment, also has only one lefthander in the bullpen in Aaron Loup, although Gibbons indicated on Saturday he has confidence in some of his righthanded options to attack opposition lefthanded hitters late in games. He mentioned, specifically, Steve Delabar because of his split-fingered pitch and Sergio Santos, whose slider is as good as anyones in baseball when hes on his game. The priority is resetting the four-man bench rather than continuing with an eight-man bullpen, which essentially eliminates the chance of recalling another lefthanded reliever like Rob Rasmussen. Moving On Up Lefthanded starting pitching prospect Daniel Norris, who recently participated in the Single-A Florida State League All-Star Game, has been promoted to Double-A New Hampshire. The 21-year-old was dominant for the Dunedin Blue Jays, helping the club to the first half division title. In 13 starts, Norris went 6-0 with a 1.22 ERA, a 1.025 WHIP and 76 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings. He had a 4.22:1 strikeout to walk ratio, easily his best output since turning pro in 2012. Norris was selected by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 2011 draft out of Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee. ' ' '

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Martin Brodeur thought the puck might have been kicked in. Columbus coach Todd Richards preferred to call it good fortune. Nick Foligno scored the game-winning goal with 91 seconds left when Ryan Johansens shot went in off his skate, giving the Blue Jackets a 5-4 victory over Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. "Weve been on the other side of some of these," Richards said, referring to a sloppy yet entertaining game of turnovers, mistakes and prime scoring chances. "We were even or maybe outplayed the other team and came out on the losing side. Sometimes these games even themselves out and tonight we won a game when the hockey gods helped us out a little bit." The Devils, who dominated long segments of the final period, tied it with 6:01 remaining when Damien Brunner, who had two goals, wheeled and slapped a long rebound past Columbus goalie Curtis McElhinney. But with 1:31 remaining, Johansen took a shot from the left dot that caught the skate of Foligno, who was shadowed by defenceman Anton Volchenkov, and skittered into the net past Brodeur. Asked if the puck was kicked in, Brodeur said, "It looked like it, but its kind of hard. I know he deflected it and his toe looked like it was up on the replay." The career wins leader also said that a few seconds before the deciding goal, he was interfered with by a Columbus player. The Blue Jackets preferred to look at their relentless comeback. "We didnt back down," Foligno said. Johansen said the goal was clean. "I was trying to just throw it to (Foligno)," he said. "I knew he was there. We got a fortunate bounce." Cam Atkinson had two goals and two assists, Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and three assists and Matt Calvert also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won their last four at home. "We definitely gritted it out," Dubinsky said. "We stepped up and (after they tied it) had a couple of good shifts, and Johansens line came up with a huge one for us." Travis Zajac and Michael Ryder also had goals for the Devils. "It should be unacceptable," Zajac said of the loss. "We shouldnt have lost that game." New Jersey has lost four of five. "Between a big save or the group finding a way to stop the bleeding, weve got to find a way to win that game," coach Peter DeBoer said. The Blue Jackets trailed 3-1 before scoring twice in 49 seconds in the second period against Brodeur, who came in 7-2-2 with a 2.05 goals-against average and .916 save percentage against Columbus. Off a faceoff, Jack Johnson fired a big slap shot from the point. Atkinson got a whack at it, with the puck dribbling behind Brodeur where Dubinsky pounced on it before the goalie could recover. Soon after that goal was announced, Dubinsky played keep-away with the puck, going twice back and forth along the back wall, before feeding Atkinson, who lifted a shot high over Brodeurs shoulder from a hard angle to tie it. "Its nice to be rewarded," Atkinson said of the victory. "We havent gotten the bounces in a while." Calvert broke a 3-all tie when he scored on a rebound after Brodeur blocked Dubinskys shot 18 seconds into the third period. Despite a two-goal deficit with a future Hall of Famer in the opposing net, the Blue Jackets still found a way to get two points. "Its too bad to mess up a game we scored four goals," Brodeur said. "It doesnt happen often that we lose a game like that." NOTES: New Jersey D Marek Zidlicky returned to the lineup after missing the previous game because of an upper-body injury. ... It is only in Cup competition you can really call a win a disappointment. On a night heavily skewing in Toronto FCs favour, a 2-1 victory over a virtual Vancouver Whitecaps reserve team hardly flatters. The first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship was an opportunity for Toronto to take control of the tie. Mission failed. Vancouver Whitecaps manager Carl Robinson elected to rest his regulars looking ahead to Saturdays game against the Columbus Crew. Even with 29-year-old Nigel Reo-Coker in the lineup, the average age of the Whitecaps starting XI was 21.6, including 17-year-old Canadian goalkeeper Marco Carducci. It was a glimpse of the future for Vancouver. The kids were alright. Toronto FC was less convincing. Toronto, with the week off until the return leg next Wednesday in Vancouver, had the luxury to play a regular starting XI. With only two changes from last weekends loss to New England, Toronto FC began the night heavy favourites. Instead, heavy legs, heavy touches, and heavy lifting were needed to see the game out. The Whitecaps grew in confidence and the manager played his cards right. Robinson, seeing weakness in TFC and his team grow into the match brought on attacking players Kekuta Manneh and Sebastian Fernandez late, pushing for an away goal. Although Vancouver conceded in the 89th minute en route, they found the precious goal in time added on and head home next week as favourite to advance. Manneh scored the goal. Not the prettiest, but a timely and much needed strike in aggregate competition. Toronto FC substitute Dwayne De Rosario was lucky to stay on the field after landing a forearm to the face of the goal scorer amongst a pile of flailing arms as Vancouver tried to get the ball back to midfield as soon as possible. Manneh and De Rosario saw yellow before the game died out and the final whistle blew. The script never seems to be straightforward for Toronto FC. They have seldom been the dominant side in any match thus far this season. Team commitment, work rate and shape remain solid, but interplay, build up, and execution in the final third continue to be issues. It takes time for a team of new faces to come together. With the World Cup break rapidly approaching, time is ticking for the team to click. Here are my five thoughts from Toronto FCs 2-1 victory: 1) Two is not enough - Toronto FC dictated proceedings all night long, rendering Vancouver reliant on the counter-attack. The build-up remained consistent and decent until reaching the final third. In and around the opposing 18-yard box, the team remains a mess, with the exception of Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley. Good thing the big money players are coming through because the rest of the team needs to be much better in dangerous areas. The final ball is often erratic. And when the ball is on a platter, the finishing goes awry. There isnt just one culprit. They are too easily letting defenders off the hook. Its all sloppy, too direct and too easy to mark. Part of the issue is the team playing too narrow. Justin Morrow and Mark Bloom rarely get involved in the attack to overlap in to dangerous areas. The bulk of the attacking play comes down the middle, with even the outside midfielders coming far too inside. More than two goals should have been had against a team of inexperienced kids. Now Toronto has to go out west and get a result. The pressure will be on the Whitecaps to get a goal, which may put Toronto back in their comfort zone playing on the counter. 2) Oh, Gilberto - More of the good and bad on display by Gilberto. Hes not doing himself or the club any favours dispelling the notion he wasnt worth the club giving up Matias Laba. The ups and downs in his game are so pronounced he may as well be called Two-Face. For a player who predicted a 25-goal season, the polish in front of goal is simply not there. Some nice interplay between Defoe and Issey Nakajima-Farran in the 21st minute broke Toronto FC free down the left flank. The Canadian Internationals cross was on point, finding Gilberto wide open on the far post at the six-yard box. The Brazilian headed wide; a brutal miss by any standard. Its now been seven games without a goal for the striker. The good: the work rate remains a plus and glimpses of his ability surface from time to time. Gilberto dropped deep into space to gain possession and played a crafty ball behind the back line, springing Defoe on his goal. More of this kind of positive play will ease the critics. They will ultimately not be silenced until he starts scoring goals. Designated Players must be impactful. Thus far, the returns are subpar. With an injured Bright Dike and De Rosario struggling to find form, a productive Gilberto is essential for sustained team success. 3) Defoe does it again - Defoe looked much sharper in his second game back returning from a nagging hamstring injury. His quickness and superior movement was on full display in the win. Defoe was cool in front of goal, composed as ever beating Carducci for his 28th minute opener, his fourth wearing red. Defoe played provider on Bradleys 89th minute winner, drawing two defenders to him before playing a diagonal ball finding Bradley in space. Whenever he gets the ball in and around the box, he is a threat and has the ability to create on his own. Thats why its so important for the Englishman to be more involved. There were stretches in the game where he faded out of the match when Toronto FC was too sloppy in possession. He needs the ball played to his feet and his teammates to do better moving off the ball, finding space. Defoes touch is sublime and distribution is spot on. As long as Defoe stays fit, Toronto FC will remain a threat in every match they play. Hes far too dangerous. 4) Hail Cesar - Toronto FC goalkeeper Julio Cesar was named to the Brazilian squad for this summers World Cup in his home country. Cesars inclusion doesnt surprise with a resume second to none and showing good form since his arrival in Toronto. He has fit in with the team exceptionally well, on and off the field. Last years starting goalkeeper, Joe Bendik, will be called upon as stand-in upon Cesars World Cup absence. Bendik got his first start Wednesday and picked up where he left off last season with strong play. Bendik came to the rescue in the 44th minute, making a big save on Russell Teibert who found space inside the Toronto FC 18-yard box. It was instinctive stuff, with Bendik reading the play, coming off his line and staying big. Doneil Henry helped out Bendik seconds later, clearing Nicolas Mezquidas effort off the goalline. Bendik came up big again in the 75th minute with a pair of timely saves on Omar Saldado. The goal conceded was a mess with the defending all over the place. The blame hardly falls on the goalkeeper. There was enough on display Wednesday to alleviate any worry about a significant dip in goalkeeping when Cesar is gone. But theres no question who remains the number one. 5) Not your average Joe - Linesman Joe Fletcher manned the west-side touchline for the match. Much bigger games lay ahead for the Niagara Falls native in the not-so distant future. The 37-year old will be running the touchline at this summers World Cup, just over a month away. The assistant referee will link up with an American duo to form one of the 25 officiating crews in Brazil. The last Canadian official to participate at a World Cup was Hector Vergara who was part of the 2002, 2006, and 2010 competitions. Wishing Joe the best of luck and safe travels this summer. AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Bubba Watson likes the way he looks in green. He wants to get that colour back in his wardrobe. Watson surged to the Masters lead with a spree of birdies on the back side Friday, positioning him for a weekend run at his second green jacket in three years. "Im trying to get the jacket back," Watson said. "I want that feeling again." The 2012 champion at Augusta National sparked the best run of the tournament so far when he stuck his tee shot at No. 12 within 3 feet of the cup. He tapped in for the first of five straight birdies that propelled him to a 4-under 68. Even after making his second bogey of the tournament by missing a short putt at the 18th, Watson walked off with his second straight round in the 60s, a 7-under 137 total and a three-stroke lead -- the biggest 36-hole advantage at Augusta since 2006. "Its not science here," Watson said. "Its try to hit the greens, and if youre hitting the greens that means youre obviously hitting your tee shots well. So thats all Im trying to do, just hit the greens." Look whos in the mix again, too: 54-year-old Fred Couples, who posted his second straight 71. This is the fifth straight year the 1992 winner has gone to the weekend in the top 10 -- he was leading two years ago -- but hes never been able to hang on. "I cant panic," said Couples, looking to become the oldest major champion in golf history. "Youre not going to pick up two or three shots here because you want to. Its not that kind of course. Youve got to hang in there, expect a tough shot here and there. Its going to be a tough day tomorrow." And dont count out defending champion Adam Scott, who got off to a rough start but rallied for 72. The Aussie was among those four shots back, still solidly in contention to become only the fourth back-to-back winner in Masters history. Watson opened Thursday with a 69 and went bogey-free through the first 26 holes, finally stumbling at the ninth. But that bogey was quickly forgotten when he put on a dazzling display of the golf that had the patrons roaring. He took advantage of both par 5s, sandwiched around a curling, 40-foot birdie putt at the 14th that prompted him to throw both arms in the air. Watson made it five in a row at the par-3 16th, pulling off another magnificent tee shot with the 9-iron, the ball rolling up about 4 feet short of the flag. He became only the fifth player in Masters history to run off nothing but birdies from the 12th to 16th holes. A year ago, the left-hander finished in a tie for 50th last year as the defending Masters champion, his worst showing in five previous appearances. He likes being two years removed from his title a whole lot better. "I was in awe when I was the champion," Watson said. "I didnt know how to handle it the best way, so I didnt play my best golf." Watsons closest pursuer was Australias John Senden, who birdied 14 and 15 on his way to a 68 and 140 overall. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., shot an even-par second round, but his disappointing first round of 8 over will see him cut from the final weekend. The project cut is 4 over. Former Masters champion Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., will almost assuredly move on after a round of even par. He followed four birdies on the front nine with four bogeys on the back to sit at 1 over after two rounds. Scott bogeyed three of the first five holes but wound up at 141. He was joined by Denmarks Thomas Bjorn, who birdied four of the last five holes for a 68; Swedens Jonas Blixt, who managed 71 despite a double-bogey at the 11th; and 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, hardly looking like an Augusta rookie when he closed out 70 with a birdie at the tough finishing hole. Five shots back with Couples were Jimmy Walker, a three-time PGA Tour winner this season who shot 72, and Jim Furyk, whose 68 matched Watson, Senden and Bjorn for the best round of the day. First-round leader Bill Haas, teeing off on a warm, sunny afternoon with the wind picking up and the greens getting firmer, was still at 4 under approaching the turn. Then came a miserable stretch of holes starting at No. 9: bogey, bogey, double-bogey, bogey, bogey. He staggered to a 78 -- 10 shots higher than the day before, knocking him nine shots back. At least Haas gets to keep playing. Three-time winner Phil Mickelson missed the Augusta cut for the first time since 1997. Lefty had a triple-bogey at the 12th, where he knocked three straight shots in bunkers for his second triple of the tournament. Three birdies on the back side gave him a glimmer of hope, but 73 totalled up to 149 -- one shot too many. "Its tough to overcome those big numbers," said Mickelson, who had plenty of big-name company beyond the cut line. Sergio Garcia, Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Graeme McDowell, Dustin Johnson, Angel Cabrera and Charl Schwartzel were all headed home as well before the weekend. Lynch gained 113 yards in 10 carries, and Wilson ran for 88 yards in six attempts. The blowout would have been worse had Steven Hauschka not missed three field goals.Arizonas only scores were field goals of 27 and 32 yards by Chandler Catanzaro. The Cardinals only scores the last two games are six field goals by the rookie kicker.Just as he did in Seattles victory 19-3 over Arizona a month ago, Wilson did a great deal of the Seahawks damage with his feet. His 55-yard run on the final play of the first quarter moved the Seahawks past midfield, but Seattle stalled and Hausschkas 52-yard field goal was wide right.Arizona took over at its 42 and, with the help of two Seattle penalties and Arizona moved in to get Catanzaros first field goal and lead 3-0.On the second play after Arizonas kickoff, Willson got behind the Cardinals defence, Wilson lofted the ball in perfectly and the 80-yard touchdown play put Seattle up 7-3 with 7:03 to play in the half.Another Wilson scramble, of 22 yards, helped set up Lynchs 6-yard touchdown run that made it 14-3 3:41 before the half.It stayed 14-3 until the fourth quarter, when the bottom fell out for the Cardinals in what had been termed the biggest regular-season game in franchise history. Then the three late TDs made it a blowout.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

"Just glad they havent fired me yet. Im still here with a Capitals jersey. ... New coach, a new GM and well see whats going to happen with the team, the system and all kind of stuff. Its going to be an interesting year." ' ' '

There could be some history made on Friday night in Buffalo. Mike Hessman of the Toledo Mudhens needs one more homer to break the all-time International League career home run mark. Before you say "big deal" as I was tempted to do, you should know who Mike Hessman is and how he made this journey over a long and varied career. First off he was born in Fountain Valley, California, and grew into the dimensions of a true slugger. He is 65" and 215 pounds. He was chosen in the 15th round of the 1996 MLB draft by Atlanta. He made it to the "Show" with the Braves in 2003. He had a long looping swing and struck out too much and generally over a short-lived big league career, the 3B/1B also seemed to be stuck behind better players such as Chipper Jones. Besides Atlanta, Hessman also made pit stops in Detroit and with the New York Mets between 2003 and 2010, hitting .188 with 14 home runs. Over time Hessman became a fixture in the International League. Now 36, he has slugged 258 homers in the "I" to tie the late Ollie Carnegie, who spent the bulk of his career playing in Buffalo. Carnegie played his final season with the Bisons in 1945. These two were a study in physical contrasts. While Hessman is 65", Carnegie was only 57" and weighed 175 pounds. Surely the Major League home run record is more impressive and more prestigious. Babe Ruth broke Roger Connors career mark of 138 back in 1921. The Bambino ran that total up to 714 by 1935, and that mark endured until Hank Aaron broke it on April 8, 1974 at Atlanta against Al Downing and the Dodgers. So Babe Ruth held the career home run record for 53 years. Carnegies mark of 258 has stood since the year he retired as a player in 1945. If you do the math, thats 69 years. Oddly enough Carnegie never played in the Majors, largely because he didnt start playing pro ball on a regular basis until he joined Buffalo at age 32 in 1931. Before that he played mainly semi-pro or amateur ball and held down a regular job. Nowadays 258 home runs doesnt sound like all that imposing a number. But remember today, its all about player development. If you dont make the Majors by your mid-20s or maybe late 20s if youre lucky, youre going to be out of a job. You have to have a special talent and be a unique individual, as Mike Hessman must be to stick around until the age of 36. Hessman had a bit of a scare about a week ago. He had to have some tissue removed from his nose and his forehead. Luckily it proved to be non-cancerous. He missed three games this week waiting for the swelling on his face to go down, then went 0-for-3 at Coca-Cola Field on Thursday afternoon. Friday night is the series finale at Buffalo and it would only seem fitting that he would hit his 259th homer in the city where Ollie Carnegie spent the bulk of his career and is enshrined in the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. When Hessman ultimately does break this record, he has other mountains to climb. He is also third on the all-time list of homers hit in the minors. Buzz Arlett is number one with 432, Nick Cullop has 420 and Hessman checks in with 403. Scoring Big Pitching and defence may win championships, but you cant deny the fact that the Blue Jays offence could carry them a long way. Theyve scored 311 runs in 61 games and slugged 87 homers, tops in the American League in both categories. You can add the total home runs for the Royals and Yankees and get 77, 10 fewer than the Jays, or the Rangers and Red Sox and get 85, still two less than the Blue Jays. In the runs scored category, the Jays have rung up 57 more than the second-best team in their division - Baltimore (254) - and then you drop off to Boston and the Yankees at 240 and Tampa Bay at a paltry 228. Boston was the runaway leader in runs scored in the American League last season with 853 and ultimately won the World Series. Im just saying. Unusual Moments This is something that happens so rarely in baseball, yet it happened twice in the last week. The Angels Garrett Richards and Clevelands Justin Masterson both struck out the side on nine pitches. Another oddity came on Wednesday when the Phillies 35-year-old shortstop Jimmy Rollins struck out four times in a game for the first time in his career, earning the famed "Golden Sombrero". The opposing pitcher though was Washingtons Stephen Strasburg, so well cut Rollins some slack. Rollins incidently is up to 2,226 hits now for his career. He needs nine more to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt as the Phillies all-time hits leader. Since the Phils are having such a dismal season, the feeling is growing that Rollins will waive his 10-and-5 rights and will agree to a trade once the record is broken. The Tigers would be a perfect fit. The Atlanta Braves lead the National League East. Yet strangely enough, they have been held to 0 or 1 runs in a game a Major League-high 18 times. At the Draft If youre wondering why the Blue Jays used their ninth-overall pick in the Draft Thursday night to take a pitcher who just had Tommy John surgery in May, consider this. Veteran baseball writer Danny Knobler has seen Jeff Hoffman out of East Carolina pitch and said this of him: "He could be Justin Verlanders brother". Say no more! Cheap Fake Shoes . Trotz says he welcomes his new challenge. “I am very excited to join the Washington Capitals and want to thank Ted Leonsis, Dick Patrick and Brian MacLellan for this opportunity,” said Trotz in the release. “This is a great organization with a strong foundation and a tremendous fan base. The Capitals fired head coach Adam Oates and did not renew the contract of general manager George McPhee at the end of the season after the team missed the playoffs with a record of 38-30-14. ' ' '

CHICAGO -- The swirling snow came down in waves, dancing around the upper deck before eventually descending to the temporary ice rink in the middle of a football field. Playing in a winter wonderland, Jonathan Toews showed his two-way game is perfect for any conditions. Toews had two goals and an assist at a picturesque Soldier Field, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 on Saturday night in the finale of the NHL Stadium Series. "We felt like we could find a way to score every time we got the puck," Toews said. "It honestly did feel like we were playing (pickup) hockey in the backyard." Patrick Sharp scored in the first period and Patrick Kane set up Kris Versteegs 100th career goal in the second, helping Chicago to its first win since Feb. 5 at Anaheim. The reigning Stanley Cup champions dropped their final game before the Olympic break, and then lost 2-1 at the New York Rangers on Thursday night. James Neal was credited with Pittsburghs only goal when Blackhawks defenceman Brent Seabrook sent the puck into his own net at 6:21 of the third. Marc-Andre Fleury had 35 saves in the Penguins third straight loss, matching a season high. "It wouldnt have mattered if we played this game inside or outside or it was snow or no snow," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "They were better and more prepared to play, whatever the conditions were." The crowd of 62,921, dressed from head to toe in several layers, usually topped by their favourite jersey, roared when the Penguins and Blackhawks emerged from separate tunnels before the game. The players were greeted by rows of fireworks and shooting flames that sent clouds of smoke into the falling flakes. The snow was heavy for most of the first period, and then died down at the start of the second before picking up in intensity again. The small ice crew tried its best to keep up, but it was fighting an impossible battle, and inches of snow piled up on the surface between breaks in the action. Blackhawks defenceman Duncan Keith tried to play the puck forward at one point in the first, but only got part of it and it sledded to a stop a few feet away. "One time, I was carrying it up the ice and had to look down three or four times just to kind of see where it was," Kane said. "You could feel the snow down there, so its obviously a little bit harder to push it." The snow and frigid temperatures -- it was 17 degrees when the puck was dropped for the opening faceoff -- made life difficult on the star-studded teams, full of Olympians and other All-Stars. It also provided a prime-time showcase for the considerable skills of Toews, who teamed with Pittsburgh centre Sidney Crosby to lead Canada to the gold medal in the Sochi Games last weekend. Toews and Crosby had never played against each other in an NHL regular-season game. First, Toews found Sharp for a slap shot that went over Fleurys right shoulder and off the left post at 15:35 of the first, giving Chicago a 1-0 lead. Then, Toews made an outstanding move on Pittsburgh defenceman Brooks Orpik before squeezing a backhander between Fleurys legs at 10:47 of the second. Toews celebrated his 20th goal by skating over to the Blackhawks bench and jumping into his delirious teammates. "I guess I definitely got caught up in it a little bit," said Toews, who got his nickname of "Captain Serious" for his stoic demeanour. Kane added his own flashy play, making a perfect pass to Versteeg for a goalmouth tip-in that made it 3-0 at 16:43. Versteeg ended an 11-game scoring drought by scoring at a third Chicago sports venue, joining Wrigley Field in the 2009 Winter Classic and the United Center. "Just drive the net and put your stick down and you know a guy like Kaner is going to find you when he can," Versteeg said. "It was just a great pass." Neal cut the lead to 3-1 in the third, but Bryan Bickell added his ninth goal at 13:57 before Toews finished the scoring with 2:08 to go. "Theyre a good hockey team and they outplayed us," Crosby said. "They had us trapped in a lot of the game." Corey Crawford had 31 stops for the Blackhawks, who lost forward Marian Hossa to an upper-body injury in the first period. It was unclear when exactly Hossa was injured. He took a hard hit from Penguins forward Craig Adams during Chicagos second power play of the first period. "Hossa might miss some time," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "Well get a better idea probably more on Monday, pretty good idea, but well know more in a couple of days. But not long term." ROGERS, Ark. - Whether its because of her improved play or the reason for it, Michelle Wie appears as comfortable on and off the golf course as at any time in her career. Wie continued her season-long surge on the LPGA Tour on Saturday, shooting her second straight 5-under 66 to take a two-shot lead in the suspended second round of the NW Arkansas Championship. The performance put the U.S. Womens Open champion within a round of back-to-back wins for the first time in her LPGA Tour career, not that she showed any signs of stress after reaching 10 under overall. In fact, shortly after surging into the lead at Pinnacle Country Club, Wie joined PGA Tour pros Rickie Fowler and Keegan Bradley as part of a social media challenge in dumping a bucket of ice water on herself on the driving range. Yes, life is good at the moment for Wie. "I think it comes hand in hand," Wie said about her winning and revamped attitude. "... I played really well toward the end of the year last year ... took a lot of time off, took about a month and a half. So, I just felt really refreshed, and I think it comes hand in hand." All 72 players in the afternoon session were unable to finish on Saturday because of thunderstorms, with second-round play expected to finish early Sunday before the final round begins later in the morning. Before the rain arrived, the morning pairings were once again left chasing Wie — who earned her first major victory at the U.S. Womens Open last week at Pinehurst after winning earlier in the season in her home state of Hawaii. So Yeon Ryu, paired with Wie, was second at 8 under after her second straight 67, while Suzann Pettersen, Chella Choi and Line Vedel were three strokes back. Pettersen had a 67, Choi shot 65, and Vedel had five holes left. Top-ranked and local favourite Stacy Lewis was four shots behind at 6 under, a week after finishing a shot behind Wie at Pinehurst. The two are training and practice partners in Florida, and Wie couldnt help but challenge her friend to the ice bucket shower after her dousing. "Michelles obviously playing some really good golf," Lewis said. "Im going to have to shoot a good number tomorrow. ... At least I put a good number up today, and well see what happens tomorrow." Lewis made the early charge Saturday to close within a shot of first-round leader Alena Sharp of Hamilton, much to the delight of the pro-Arkansas crowd — where Lewis played collegiately. Sharp made it through 15 holes prior to the delay. For the second straight day, however, Wie saved her best for the back. She jumped into contention with a 4-under 31 on the back nine on Friday. After teeing off on the back nine Saturday, she once again closed with a flurry — birdieing four of her final seven holes to shoot a 4-under 32 and surge into the lead. She putted 29 times on Saturday, a day after needing 28 in her opening round using her more hunched-over style. "These days, Michelles on fire," Ryu said. "I played with her today and yesterday, and her putting was awesome. I think thats why she could win a major tournament." Wie put the finishing touch on her round — and quest for a second straight tournament victory — with a 3-foot birdie putt on No. 9 that put her within reach of back-to-back wins. "I just want to kind of get through tomorrow," Wie said. "But at the same time, it is definitely in the back of my mind ... If I can get it done, hopefully it will happen." Wie held off Lewis by a shot to win her first major title in the U.S Womens Open. Playing a group behind Lewis on Saturday, Wie bogeyed her second hole, No. 11, and recovered with a birdie on the par-5 14th. She followed that with a second straight birdie on a par 5, getting up and down off the fringe on No. 18 to reach 6 under. Her birdie spree followed on the front nine, with large galleries following both Lewis and Wie. Lewis followed a sluggish first round in which she putted 31 times by needing only 24 putts on Saturday. She stumbled with a bogey out of the greenside bunker on the par-3 fourth hole before recovering with birdies on No. 5 and 9. Shell need more of the same if she or anyone else is to catch Wie on Sunday. "Its going to have to be something pretty low," Lewis said. "The way Michelle and a lot of those girls play, theyre not really going to come back to us."
