NAGANO, Japan -- Shani Davis and Heather Richardson of the United States won their 1,000-meter races at the world sprint speedskating championships on Sunday. Davis clocked a time of 1 minute, 08.96 seconds to edge Denis Kuzin of Kazakhstan by 0.58 seconds. Michel Mulder of the Netherlands was third in 1:09.96. Richardson posted a time of 1:15.28 to win the womens 1,000, beating Chinas Hong Zhang by 0.16 seconds. Margot Boer of the Netherlands took third place with a time of 1:16.12. The world sprint speed skating championships features 50 of the fastest sprinters in the world competing in 500 and 1,000 metre races. Mulder won the mens 500 race in a time of 35.12, 0.05 seconds ahead of Daniel Greig of Australia. Keiichiro Nagashima of Japan finished third in 35.28. Jing Yu of China won the womens 500 with a time of 37.72, adding to her win in the same event on Saturday. Boer was second 0.33 seconds behind Yu. Richardson placed third in 38.04 seconds. Mulder won the overall mens title, which combines results from both days of competition while Yu won the womens title. Laurent Dubreuil of Levis, Que., had Canadas best result of the day, finishing fourth in the mens 500. Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., will leave the event without a medal. Nesbitt, who won Olympic gold in the 1,000 four years ago in Vancouver, finished fifth in the 1,000 Sunday. She was also well off the pace in 14th in the 500. Nick Anderson Rays Jersey . Still, he can appreciate a good one. Ward stopped 35 shots in the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night, with none more entertaining than his desperation stick save against Colin Greening in the first period. "I had goose bumps after that one," Ward said. "We play this game for a living but when you make a save like that, I turn into a little kid. It also was a sigh of relief to get that save because that was a big part of the game in the first period." Ward had already given up a rebound goal to Jason Spezza 1:07 into the game when he stopped Greening to keep it close for Carolina, who scored three times in the second to take command. Ward said his confidence grew immensely playing on consecutive days for the first time this season. He missed 10 games with a lower-body injury and returned to the lineup on Nov. 18.
